Large decorative stoneware bowl, by Ulla Viotti (B.1933)
Ulla Viotti was an internationally acclaimed ceramicist and sculptor recognised for her pioneering work in architectural ceramics and sculptural brick. She studied sculpture at Blackpool School of Art (1950–51) and ceramics at Stockholm’s National School of Arts, Crafts and Design (1952–56). After graduating she worked briefly in ceramic factories before joining Hemgården in Karlskoga in 1957, where she taught art and established her own pottery in 1960.
A Royal Foundation award enabled her to study Etruscan ceramics in Italy in the early 1960s, followed by a formative period in Israel (1966–67), where exposure to ancient landscapes and experimental ceramic practices prompted a decisive shift in her work. In 1967 she worked in a stoneware factory in Jaffa, and from 1968 began focusing on relief compositions rather than wheel-thrown pottery. Her first public commission followed soon after, for a bank in Katrineholm in 1969.
During the 1970s she became a leading advocate for architectural ceramics, organising Sweden’s first international ceramics symposium in Jönköping in 1975 and relocating to Österlen in 1976, where she continued to receive major commissions for public buildings. She also participated in international symposia and exhibitions, including the first International Potters Festival in Aberystwyth in 1987.
Her work is represented in museum and public collections across Sweden and the UK, reflecting a career that has significantly expanded the expressive and architectural possibilities of contemporary ceramic art.
