Painted earthenware of a Girl's Head, by Elvine Osterman (B.1908)

£480.00

A sensitively modelled and hand-painted earthenware study by Swedish artist Elvine Österman, depicting a young girl with softly articulated features and expressive surface treatment. The work reflects Österman’s painterly sensibility, with nuanced colour application and a quiet emotional depth that bridges fine art and decorative form.

Born in Vänersborg in 1908, Österman studied at the Slöjdföreningen’s School in Gothenburg before continuing at Valand’s School of Fine Arts under Tor Bjurström. There she became associated with a circle of artists including Inge Schiöler, Åke Göransson, Ivan Ivarson, and Ragnar Sandberg, and is regarded as part of the loose grouping known as the Gothenburg Colorists, a movement distinguished by its expressive palette and confident handling of colour.

Österman held her first solo exhibition in Copenhagen in 1935, followed by numerous exhibitions in Scandinavia and beyond. Over the course of her career she received several scholarships and spent extended periods in Greece and Italy, influences that subtly informed her tonal sensitivity. She is also known for her drawings of Martin Luther King, now held in a United States collection. Her work is represented in the collections of museums including Gothenburg, Helsingborg, and Landskrona.
